Yup...definitely a redbud. I teach people about plants so I have had to learn to identify plants from pictures over and over. :) Early spring bloomer with heart shaped leaves. Can be an understory plant that can handle some shade. Typically stays small as well.

It appears to be a crab apple tree. What time of the year was the pic taken?

Sorry dad but this one is not the tulip tree :P . The tulip tree flowers are quite a bit larger. This is definitely the redbud which you have seen just as much or more than the tulip tree. The redbud comes in shades of lighter pink to deeper purple.

I have seen this type of tree often and I think I have the name: These are among the first flowers of the spring.

Tulip Tree - Japanese Magnolia, Purple flowers that look just like Tulips are produced in abundance at the tips of the branches before new foliage emerges. Truly outstanding! Can be grown as a shrub or small tree.

Another possible choice:
Saucer Magnolia - Magnolia soulangiana, This widely planted ornamental tree is a hybrid of two Chinese magnolias, the Yulan Magnolia and the Lily Magnolia. The Saucer Magnolia is smaller than our native.

In any event the tree is very nice to look at. I should think of getting one for my yard. Maybe next year.

The flowers look really similar, but I think what convinces me is the shape of the trees in some of the pictures I've seen of the Redbud. I didn't take any pictures of the whole tree, but on google images that's a lot of what we saw.

Yeah - strange. It wouldn't let me post a pic, so here is the link: http://flickr.com/photos/astarwithin/2332271966/

Yeah, that's pretty similar! I tried posting a pic of a tree I saw in Texas, but I think it moderated it.
