Mystery Flower

May 9, 2008 - 10:16 am PDT

Anyone know what this flower is? Corey and me saw this plant a lot on our way to Louisiana, and were curious. It was especially prevalent in Virginia, and it’s very pretty. Click the image for a close-up to see the flowers better. Recognize it at all?

From the pic it looks like a tree? If it is it looks like a Redbud Tree. They are very prevalent in this state as I imagine they are in VA. They are well past bloom here but your timing would probably be about right for VA.

Yeah, I think they were trees. Thanks for the lead, I’ll have to look that one up.

Ohh cherry trees are pretty, but looking at google images it looks more like a Redbud. Check out these images…

I wonder if it’s the same tree I saw in Texas, just in bloom:

Yeah, that’s pretty similar! I tried posting a pic of a tree I saw in Texas, but I think it moderated it.

Ok, it’s moderating all my posts :(

I don’t understand that. If you’ve been approved before, it shouldn’t mark you as spam.

Yeah - strange. It wouldn’t let me post a pic, so here is the link: http://flickr.com/photos/astarwithin/2332271966/

The flowers look really similar, but I think what convinces me is the shape of the trees in some of the pictures I’ve seen of the Redbud. I didn’t take any pictures of the whole tree, but on google images that’s a lot of what we saw.

Oh yeah, it is definitively the Redbud. The three petal thing is a dead ringer.

I have seen this type of tree often and I think I have the name: These are among the first flowers of the spring.

Tulip Tree - Japanese Magnolia, Purple flowers that look just like Tulips are produced in abundance at the tips of the branches before new foliage emerges. Truly outstanding! Can be grown as a shrub or small tree.

Another possible choice:
Saucer Magnolia - Magnolia soulangiana, This widely planted ornamental tree is a hybrid of two Chinese magnolias, the Yulan Magnolia and the Lily Magnolia. The Saucer Magnolia is smaller than our native.

In any event the tree is very nice to look at. I should think of getting one for my yard. Maybe next year.

Sorry dad but this one is not the tulip tree :P . The tulip tree flowers are quite a bit larger. This is definitely the redbud which you have seen just as much or more than the tulip tree. The redbud comes in shades of lighter pink to deeper purple.

It appears to be a crab apple tree. What time of the year was the pic taken?

Yup…definitely a redbud. I teach people about plants so I have had to learn to identify plants from pictures over and over. :) Early spring bloomer with heart shaped leaves. Can be an understory plant that can handle some shade. Typically stays small as well.
